There are several hundred major SMEs in Switzerland that have neither planned how they will attract their next generation of staff nor yet begun to recruit the new employees they desperately need – even though, for the majority of them, these decisions are long overdue. This phenomenon, inexplicable from an entrepreneurial perspective, is often linked to an unwillingness on the part of some key individuals to relinquish power, or, in the case of family firms, to doubts – either within or outside the company – as to the suitability of potential heirs and successors.

In practice however, by far the greatest problem is friction between individual family members. A rigorously structured approach is counselled in such cases, with plenty of advice offered and taken on the legal, commercial and especially interpersonal aspects of the process.
